Early in the morning on 19th January the aurora was still visible in the sky to at least 08:28 UTC, thanks to the long hours of darkness in Iceland at this time of year. In the evening, we saw aurora at 20:35 UTC and stayed out until 21:55, although the aurora was still ongoing when w
A clear arc of aurora could be seen low in the northern sky this evening, which I first noticed at 21:55 UTC and which was still going strong at midnight when I ended my observations. This aurora was predominantly of moderate activity, but there were brief spells of stronger activity
There was some moderate aurora activity this evening, with a weak arc in the northern sky from soon after dark. I stayed out until just after midnight, but unfortunately had a battle with the clouds for the latter part of the evening. Some lovely tall rays were visible in one cloud ga
I saw aurora from 19:30 UTC this evening. For the early part of the evening it was present as a low altitude weak to moderate intensity rayed band in the north (Images 1 to 3), with the strongest activity at 15 to 20 degrees height and weaker rays (including purple ray tops on camera)
New Years Eve saw the return of enhanced solar winds from a coronal hole that has been present on the sun for the last few rotations. There were clear skies in south-west Iceland although the bright full moon washed out some of the aurora display. However, we had moderate activity for
This evening I had a brief view of a low-altitude aurora glowing over the top of the mountains to the north of my location. In the photo below, a small area of green glow can be seen along the top of the mountain with the main auroral band being located lower to the north and blocked
A reasonably strong green auroral arc was visible in the north again this evening at around 20:00 UTC. Unfortunately it was very windy at my location and I only took a few record shots between 19:57 and 20:08 which are shown below (Images 1 to 4). Later in the evening at around 22:20
There was a Christmas Day aurora this evening which started with a moderate intensity green arc low in the northern horizon from 18:45 UTC (Images 1 and 2). Later in the evening there was a weak striated band overhead which I observed from 23:22 on the 25th until 00:15 on the 26th (Im
Despite patchy cloud I was able to see a low aurora arc to the north between 19:17 and 19:31 UTC this evening, before the clouds along the northern mountains completely hid it from view. The arc was a weak green to the naked eye but brighter on the camera.
A very weak aurora was visible tonight from (at least) 22:48 to 23:25 UTC, comprising a low rayed arc at about 15 degrees altitude in the north which was barely visible at all with the naked eye but could be seen slightly better by the camera. For a short while a second diffuse arc co
