There was a big blast of aurora this evening – I saw a bright band forming in the sky at 20:45 UTC, and over the next 15 min it developed into a bright dancing aurora directly overhead with some pinks to the eye. Unfortunately I was not quite ready with the camera, but I had lovely views by eye despite some persistent clouds and even some rain showers. The Imagine Peace Tower was also lit up for the first time of the winter today, and it was good to see the familiar vertical tower of light in amongst the aurora display. My first image taken at 20:58 shows green aurora covering much of the northern sky (Image 1), and large amounts of green were also present to the east (Image 2) and west (Image 3). In Image 4 I am looking south-east, and you can see that much of the aurora is also located southwards of me. In fact this storm was sufficiently strong that the main band of aurora had rapidly shifted southwards of Iceland, to leave a relatively weak, diffuse and widespread aurora behind it. Image 5 is looking directly upward at the aurora in the sky above.
