The 2018/19 aurora season began for me on the evening of the 15th August, with a very bright aurora to the eye when I left home at 23:44 UTC. As the sky was still very light in the twilight then I hadn’t expected to see any aurora until later in the night, and this was a pleasant surprise. I had a great show by eye as I walked to a location and assembled the camera. At which point the aurora promptly diminished to a low green tinge (photo from 00:10 UTC on 16 August 2018), and within an hour there was no visible sky left due to a thick cover of cloud. Still, it was nice to begin the season, and on exactly the same date as last year.
